About the Average Calculator

The average, or arithmetic mean, is the sum of a set of numbers divided by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is 24 divided by 3, which is 8. It is the most common way to summarise a set of values such as test scores, prices or measurements.

The mean can be misleading when a few values are very large or small. If four people earn 30,000 and one earns 500,000, the mean is 124,000, which describes nobody. In such cases the median, the middle value when sorted, is a better summary. The mode is the most frequent value and is useful for categories such as shoe sizes.

Use the calculator to find the mean, median, mode and range of a list in one go.

Worked example

For the scores 70, 75, 80, 85 and 100, the sum is 410 and the mean is 82. The median is 80 and the range is 30.

Tips for best results

  • For a weighted average, multiply each value by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight.
