About the Reading Time Calculator

A reading time calculator estimates the time required for an average adult to read or speak a given passage of text. Displaying estimated reading times at the top of blog articles, essays, documentation, and newsletters sets reader expectations and measurably increases content engagement and completion rates.

Extensive reading research establishes that the average adult reads silently at a pace of 200 to 250 words per minute (wpm) for general English prose. Technical documentation, scientific journals, or texts with complex code snippets drop the comprehension rate to 130–160 wpm. For public speaking or podcasts, natural conversational delivery averages 130 to 150 words per minute.

The formula calculates duration by dividing total word count by the reading speed: Reading Time = Total Words ÷ 225 wpm. Passages under one minute are conventionally labelled '1 min read'.

Worked example: Article reading estimation

An informative blog post containing 1,350 words: Silent reading time (at 225 wpm) = 1,350 ÷ 225 = 6.0 minutes. Speaking time for a podcast script (at 140 wpm) = 1,350 ÷ 140 ≈ 9.6 minutes.

Tips for best results

  • Add 12 to 15 seconds of estimated reading time for each embedded chart, infographic, or data table in long-form guides.
  • If preparing a speech or presentation, time your draft using speaking rate (130-150 wpm) rather than silent reading rate.
  • Break articles longer than 8 minutes (1,800+ words) into distinct chapters or add a table of contents to aid reader navigation.
