About the ROI Calculator

Return on investment (ROI) measures how much you gained or lost relative to what you put in. The formula is (final value minus initial cost) divided by initial cost, times 100. An investment of 2,000 that returns 2,500 has an ROI of 25 percent.

ROI is simple, which is both its strength and its weakness. It ignores time: a 25 percent return over one year is very different from 25 percent over ten. For comparing investments of different lengths, annualised return is a fairer measure. It also ignores risk, so a high ROI from a risky venture is not automatically better than a modest one from a safe one.

Include all costs when you calculate it, such as fees, taxes, running costs and the time you spent. Leaving costs out makes almost any project look better than it was.

Worked example

A marketing campaign costs 5,000 and generates 8,000 in extra profit before the campaign cost. Net gain is 3,000, so ROI is 3,000 divided by 5,000, which is 60 percent.

Tips for best results

  • Compare ROI across projects over the same time period.
  • Use the same definition of profit each time so results are comparable.
