About the Discount Calculator

A discount calculator tells you the final price after a percentage is taken off, and how much you save. The sale price is the original price multiplied by one minus the discount rate. A 30% reduction on a 250 item costs 250 times 0.7, which is 175, saving you 75.

The most useful thing to understand is how stacked discounts work. Two successive discounts do not add together. Taking 20% off and then a further 10% off is not a 30% reduction: the first leaves 80% of the price and the second takes 10% of that remainder, so you pay 0.8 times 0.9, which is 72% of the original. The total saving is 28%.

You can also work backwards. If a shirt costs 45 after a 25% discount, the original price was 45 divided by 0.75, which is 60. This helps you check whether an advertised saving is genuine.

Worked example

A laptop is listed at 900 with 15% off, and you have a voucher for a further 10% off the sale price. After the first discount you pay 765. The voucher takes 10% off that, so the final price is 688.50. Your total saving is 211.50, an effective discount of 23.5%.

Tips for best results

  • Check whether a quoted price already includes tax before comparing offers.
  • Compare the final price, not just the percentage: a bigger percentage on a cheap item can save less cash than a modest percentage on an expensive one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Discount amount = Original price × (Discount % ÷ 100). Sale price = Original price − Discount amount.

What is 20% off £50?

20% of £50 = £10 discount, so the sale price is £40.

How do I find what percentage discount was applied?

Percentage off = ((Original price − Sale price) ÷ Original price) × 100.
