About the Compound Interest Calculator

Compound interest means you earn interest on your original money and also on the interest already added. The final amount is the principal multiplied by one plus the periodic rate, raised to the number of periods. With annual compounding that is the principal times (1 + r) to the power of the number of years.

How often interest is added matters, but less than people expect. Monthly instead of yearly compounding gives a slightly higher result, while time and rate have a much bigger effect. This is why starting early is so powerful: the longer money grows, the more of the final value comes from interest on interest.

A quick shortcut is the rule of 72: divide 72 by the annual rate to estimate the years needed to double your money. At 6% that is about 12 years; at 8%, about 9. Compounding also works against you on debt, which is why credit card balances grow quickly when only minimum payments are made.

Worked example

Investing 5,000 at 7% a year for 10 years with annual compounding grows to about 9,835.76. With monthly compounding it reaches about 10,048.31.

Tips for best results

  • Real investments do not earn a steady rate every year, so treat the result as an illustration, not a forecast.
  • Fees and inflation reduce your real return. Subtract them from the rate for a more realistic picture.
