Tip Calculator
Calculate how much to tip at a restaurant, split the bill between people, and see the total amount each person pays.
About the Tip Calculator
A tip calculator works out the gratuity on a bill and, for a group, each person's share. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and it returns the tip, the total and the amount per person.
Customs vary enormously. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is standard in restaurants, while in much of Europe a service charge is already included and a small round-up is plenty. In some countries tipping is not expected at all. Check whether a service charge has already been added before tipping on top.
To estimate in your head, find 10% by moving the decimal point one place, then double it for 20% or halve it and add for 15%. For a bill of 64, 10% is 6.40, so 20% is 12.80.
A dinner bill of 148 split between four people with an 18% tip gives a tip of 26.64, a total of 174.64 and 43.66 per person.
Tips for best results
- Decide in advance whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount, and be consistent.
- Round the per-person amount up to a convenient figure if you prefer to pay in whole numbers.
