UUID v4 — randomly generated using crypto.getRandomValues() for cryptographic randomness.

About the UUID Generator

A UUID, or universally unique identifier, is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, such as 123e4567-e89b-42d3-a456-426614174000. Software uses UUIDs as identifiers for database rows, files, sessions and messages because many machines can create them independently without a central authority.

This tool generates version 4 UUIDs, built from random numbers. Of the 128 bits, 122 are random, so the chance of two colliding is negligible for any realistic system. You can choose lower or upper case, or remove the hyphens.

UUIDs are identifiers, not secrets. Do not use them as passwords or security tokens. Random UUIDs are also not sorted by creation time, which can affect database index performance in very large tables.

Worked example

A generated value such as 3f2b8c4e-9a1d-4e6b-8f0a-2c7d5b1e9a34 has the digit 4 at the start of the third group, which marks it as version 4.

Tips for best results

  • Generate several at once when you need test data.
  • Store UUIDs in a native UUID or binary column if your database supports it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UUID Generator free to use?

Yes — UUID Generator is completely free, unlimited, and requires no sign-up.

What is a UUID v4?

UUID v4 is the most common type — it uses random numbers. The chance of two v4 UUIDs colliding is astronomically small, making them safe to use as unique identifiers in databases and APIs.

Does the output follow the standard spec?

Yes — output follows the standard format, so it's compatible with other tools and libraries.

Does it work on mobile and tablet?

Yes — UUID Generator works on any modern browser, including mobile and tablet, no app required.
