About the URL Encoder

A URL encoder (percent-encoder) converts spaces, symbols, and non-ASCII characters in web addresses into standardized percent-encoded sequences (`%XX`). Web URLs can only contain a specific set of safe ASCII characters; special characters must be encoded to prevent broken links and query parsing errors.

Characters with reserved syntactic meanings in URLs (such as `?`, `&`, `=`, `/`, `#`) indicate protocol boundaries, paths, query parameters, and anchor fragments. When passing text that contains these characters as parameter values (such as a search query containing an ampersand: "Rock & Roll"), encoding converts the ampersand to `%26` so the web server does not mistake it for a parameter separator.

Spaces are converted to either `%20` (standard percent-encoding) or `+` (application/x-www-form-urlencoded format). This tool handles full UTF-8 characters, ensuring international alphabets and emojis encode reliably.

Worked example: Encoding URL query parameters

Original text: `Search query: Books & Coffee!` Percent-encoded output: `Search%20query%3A%20Books%20%26%20Coffee%21`

Tips for best results

  • Encode individual query parameter values rather than the entire URL; encoding the full address will replace 'http://' slashes with '%2F', breaking the link.
  • Spaces can be represented by '%20' or '+'; '%20' is preferred for general URI standards while '+' is common in form submissions.
  • Always URL-encode user-generated input before appending it to redirect URLs to prevent security vulnerabilities like parameter injection.
