Writing for Readability: Flesch-Kincaid, Word Counts, and Web Engagement

Online readers do not read web pages word-for-word—they scan headings, bullet points, and short paragraphs. Understanding readability metrics and pacing helps you communicate complex ideas clearly and retain audience attention.

Average Silent Reading Speeds

Extensive cognitive reading studies establish that average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction web content ranges between 200 and 250 words per minute (WPM). When estimating reading time for blog posts and technical guides, 200 to 225 WPM provides the most accurate baseline.

For technical documentation containing code snippets or mathematical formulas, comprehension drops to 120–150 WPM as readers pause to digest structural details.

The Flesch-Kincaid Readability Benchmark

The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text on a 100-point scale based on average sentence length and average syllables per word. Scores between 60 and 70 correspond to standard conversational English (understood by 13- to 15-year-olds), which is the target range for consumer web publications.

To improve readability: split multi-clause run-on sentences into concise standalone thoughts, replace polysyllabic jargon with common verbs, and break dense text blocks with visual headers and bulleted lists.
