JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

Choosing the wrong image format can make a page slow or a logo look fuzzy. The three formats you will meet most are JPG, PNG and WebP. Each has a job it does best.

JPG: best for photographs

JPG (also written JPEG) uses lossy compression. It throws away fine detail that the eye barely notices, so photographs with smooth gradients and many colours become very small. The weakness is that it does not support transparency, and sharp edges, such as text, can show faint blotches when compressed heavily.

PNG: best for graphics, screenshots and transparency

PNG is lossless, so every pixel is stored exactly. It supports transparent backgrounds, which makes it the standard choice for logos and icons. Flat colours and sharp lines compress well in PNG, but photographs become large, often several times the size of the equivalent JPG.

WebP: a modern all-rounder

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency. At similar visual quality, WebP files are commonly 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG. All current major browsers display it. The remaining drawback is that some older software and many upload forms still only accept JPG or PNG.

A simple decision guide

Use JPG or WebP for photographs on web pages. Use PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything needing transparency. Use WebP when you want the smallest file and know the destination accepts it. If a form demands a specific format, convert to that format but start from the best-quality original you have.

Size matters more than format

A 4000 pixel wide photo displayed in a 800 pixel wide column wastes bandwidth in any format. Resize the dimensions first, then choose a format and quality. Doing this can cut a file from several megabytes to under 200 KB with no visible difference on screen.
