How to Convert Grams to Ounces: Formulas, Tables & Nutrition Calculations
While most of the world uses the metric system (grams and kilograms), recipes and product labels from the United States and the United Kingdom frequently quote ingredients in ounces. Here is how to convert grams back to ounces effortlessly.

The Gram to Ounce Formula
To convert grams to ounces, divide the number of grams by 28.35 (or multiply grams by 0.035274):
Ounces (oz) = Grams (g) ÷ 28.3495
Example: Converting 250 grams of granulated sugar: 250 ÷ 28.35 = 8.82 ounces (roughly 8 and 3/4 oz).
Everyday Cooking & Nutrition Benchmarks
• 10 g = 0.35 oz (about 2 teaspoons of sugar)
• 50 g = 1.76 oz
• 100 g = 3.53 oz (a standard chocolate bar or small chicken breast)
• 200 g = 7.05 oz
• 250 g = 8.82 oz (a standard European block of butter)
• 500 g = 17.64 oz (1.1 lbs, just over a pound)
• 1,000 g (1 kg) = 35.27 oz (2.2 lbs)
Handling Fluid Ounces vs Weight Ounces
Never confuse weight ounces (mass) with fluid ounces (volume). 1 fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume (approximately 29.57 ml in the US, or 28.41 ml in the UK). For pure water at room temperature, 1 fluid ounce weighs almost exactly 1 ounce of mass, but for honey, oil, or flour, weight and volume diverge significantly.
